Block of the Month – Intro

After finishing the Mystery Quilt the guild members have decided to do a Block of the Month sampler quilt.  We started this month with our first block and will be continuing through the winter.  We are looking forward to seeing everyone’s quilts come together over the coming months.

Modern Block of the Month 2014/2015

Materials:

10 – 12 fat quarters

3 – 3.5 yards background fabric

Easy Dresden ruler (or material for template)

template material for Drunkards Path

Info:

This project will feature a new block each month.  Many blocks will be a modern take on traditional blocks.  Fabric requirements are estimates as many of the blocks have an element improv that makes it hard to determine a set amount of fabric.  Everyone’s quilt top should end up being a unique piece!

Number of blocks:

Currently 9 blocks have been determined, but if we are having fun we can always add more when we get closer to the end.

Quilt as you go:

If you would like to practice your quilt as you go technique, this is a great project for practice.  If doing quilt as you go, add a 1.5 inch border with background fabric to the blocks before quilting to act as the sashing that would be added when making the quilt top for quilting normally.

Alternate layouts:

Currently the layout is a 3 x 3 set of squares, however you are welcome to use you imagination for combing your squares into a quilt top – on point, offset, it is up to you.

Schedule:

Aug – Improv stripes

Sept – Half square triangles

Oct – Wonky dresden

Nov – String block

Dec – Wonky log cabin

Jan – Wandering geese (paper piecing 2)

Feb – Stacked circles (drunkard’s path)

March – Herringbone

April –  Hexagons
