Our July Sew Day at Earthly Goods was a great success. Nine of us attended – we quilted, laughed, ate and quilted some more. Our next sew day is August 17 from 9:00 to 4:30 PM at Earthly Goods. The cost of attending is $10.00, payable to Ioleen that day. You can either bring your own project to work on or participate in making quilted isolette (incubator) covers as a charity project for the Royal Alex NICU (neonatal intensive care unit).
At our June meeting Chelsey suggested that we consider making these covers.
She brought the pattern to the July sew days; Cris volunteered and made a prototype. Gwen, Chelsey and Cris then met and decided that the project was feasible. They pooled their stashes last weekend and cut fabric to make at least 12 covers. They will bring them to the August sew day.
If you are interested in getting involved with quilting and assembling the covers, Cris and Gwen will be available to coordinate the project. If you have fabric or batting that you would like to contribute, please bring it on August 17 or let Cris know at crischernuka [at] gmail [dot] com. Pieces of fabric should be 1.8 m or larger, preferably nondirectional; batting pieces should be at least 25 x 25 inches.
The pattern instructions are attached; pattern pieces will be available at the workshop – please bring brown paper to trace if you wish your own set for making at home.
What to bring to August Sew Day if you plan to work on the isolete covers:
- Sewing machine
- Walking foot
- 6” x 24” ruler
- marking tool (for quilt grid or design)
- thread (some quilt tops are blue, green, yellow, fuschia, etc); the binding is white so if you choose to only bring one thread, we suggest white
- quilt pins for basting; no spray basting for this project
- anything else you may want for sewing and quilting
Cris and Gwen will bring their sergers. The pattern is available under the tab above marked as isolette cover.
